Hotel Atlantis: An Eternal Dream

In a somewhat loveless street art aesthetic, the picture is emblazoned on the wall next to a gloomily furnished bar: Muhammad Ali, his bandaged hands raised, ready to strike. The picture is just one element of this hotel’s over-decorated interior, which was once called the Atlantis. Today it is called Five, so that nobody can forget its classification: 5 stars!

In 2022, the luxury hotel at the foot of the Uetliberg in Zurich's District 3 was reopened once again. It is now owned by a billionaire from India and the concept was adopted from two hotels in Dubai; a flashy Instagram backdrop advertised with anglicisms such as ‘fun dining’ for young people who have money to spend. But Ali was, in fact, actually here once.

The Atlantis looked a little different back then, but the Y-shaped concrete building still reminds us of the modernist flair that was characteristic of the time. The hotel opened in 1970, with ‘radio and television in every room’, as the NZZ approvingly wrote. The seventies were an exciting time: Freddie Mercury once sat down for a spontaneous evening serenade in a wing of the hotel, while, another time, certain members of The Who threw all kinds of furniture into the pool.

2022 wurde das Luxushotel am Fuss des Uetlibergs im Zürcher Kreis 3 wieder einmal neu eröffnet. Es gehört jetzt einem Milliardär aus Indien. Das Konzept wurde von zwei Hotels in Dubai übernommen; eine mit Anglizismen wie «Fun-Dining» beworbene, schrill eingerichtete Instagram-Kulisse für zahlungsfreudige junge Menschen. Doch Muhammad Ali, er war tatsächlich einmal hier.

Das Atlantis sah damals ein bisschen anders aus. Der Y-förmige Betonbau erinnert noch an das moderne Flair der Anfangszeit. 1970 wurde das Hotel eröffnet, mit «Radio und Television in jedem Zimmer», wie die NZZ anerkennend schrieb. Die siebziger Jahre waren eine aufregende Zeit: Einmal setzte sich Freddie Mercury an einem Abend für ein spontanes Ständchen an den Hotelflügel, ein andermal warfen Musiker von The Who allerhand Mobiliar in den Pool.

A photo by Eric Bachmann also takes us back to Ali's visit to the Atlantis: the elegantly dressed hotel porter looks into the camera as he opens the car door for Ali. The boxer stands next to the car, looking back in a pose typical of him: introverted, melancholy even, but also as if on the lookout, ready for a piercing glance or a sharp punchline. Shortly afterwards, Ali was chauffeured to Langstrasse, where he would buy a sturdy pair of shoes – also captured on camera by Bachmann.

In December 1971, the fighter spent ten days at the Atlantis with his family. On Boxing Day, he competed against German boxer Jürgen Blin in the Hallenstadion. The difference in power between the greatest boxer of all time and the master butcher and amateur boxer from Hamburg is evident from their respective accommodation: While Ali stayed in a luxury hotel, Blin and his four-man team spent the night in the unassuming ‘Ascot’ in Zurich Enge.

Kurz darauf wird Muhammad Ali an die Langstrasse chauffiert, wo er sich – von Bachmann ebenfalls mit der Kamera festgehalten – feste Schuhe kaufen wird.

Im Dezember 1971 weilte Muhammad Ali zehn Tage mit seiner Familie im Atlantis. Am zweiten Weihnachtstag trat er im Hallenstadion gegen den deutschen Boxer Jürgen Blin an. Für das Machtgefälle zwischen dem grössten Boxer aller Zeiten und dem Fleischermeister und Amateurboxer aus Hamburg spricht schon die Unterbringung: Während Ali im Luxushotel gastierte, übernachtete Blin mit seinem vierköpfigen Team im unscheinbaren «Ascot» in Zürich Enge.

After Muhammad Ali, several other stars stayed at the Atlantis, but things turned more rocky for the hotel from the 1980s onwards. Its location next to a cow pasture, far away from the city centre, was unfavourable for a luxury hotel. The hotel was sold again and again because it was not profitable. After 2004, it stood empty for a few years before the city began using it to accommodate asylum seekers. In 2010, the building experienced another period of upheaval with squatters moving in, declaring: ‘The city is growing, but space for experimentation is dwindling.’

For a short time, the Atlantis served as accommodation for students before it was taken over by a group of investors from Qatar in 2012. The penthouse on the top floor was reserved for the emir, though he never actually paid a visit in the end. The pandemic put an end to this experiment before the next investor, the billionaire Kabir Mulchandani, injected more money from Dubai.

Nach Muhammad Ali übernachteten noch weitere Stars im Atlantis. Doch ab den achtziger Jahren wurde seine Geschichte holprig. Der Standort neben einer Kuhweide, weit ab vom Stadtzentrum, ist für ein Luxushotel ungünstig. Immer wieder wurde das Hotel verkauft, weil es nicht rentierte. Nach 2004 stand es ein paar Jahre leer, bevor die Stadt darin Asylsuchende einquartierte. Eine letzte Aufregung erlebte das Haus, als 2010 Besetzer:innen einzogen und erklärten: «Die Stadt wächst, doch Freiräume für Experimente schwinden.»

Für kurze Zeit diente das Atlantis als Unterkunft für Studierende, bevor es 2012 von einer Investorengruppe aus Katar übernommen wurde. Das Penthouse im obersten Stock war für den Emir reserviert, der jedoch kein einziges Mal zu Besuch kam. Die Pandemie setzte auch diesem Experiment ein Ende, bevor der nächste Investor, der Milliardär Kabir Mulchandani, wieder neues Geld aus Dubai schickte.

Ah, Atlantis, you experienced a few wonderful years when Muhammad Ali left poetic words on your stationery – but in the end, it all remained just an eternal dream.

Ach, Atlantis, du hast ein paar wunderbare Jahre erlebt, als Muhammad Ali poetische Worte auf deinem Briefpapier hinterlassen hat – doch letztlich bist du ein ewiger Traum geblieben.
