Evil is just a cloud

«I don't like fightin' here – I understand this is a peaceful country, it’s never been at war with nobody. But for one hour that night, this will be a violent country.» Muhammad Ali was smiling when he declared war into a Swiss television camera in 1971. The champ had come to Zurich to fight the German heavyweight Jürgen Blin at Hallenstadion. Already before his departure in New York, Ali made no secret of where he saw himself in relation to Blin: «Jürgen Blin – falling down!», rhyming in German. At a press conference in Zurich, Ali came up with a few more German battle lines, translating to: «If you're not better, my dear Blin – then the whole thing makes no sense for you!»

But the loudmouth could express himself in a different kind of poetry. In Zurich's noble Hotel Atlantis, where the boxer and his huge entourage were staying, Muhammad Ali left four short poems on hotel stationery in red and blue ballpoint ink. Three of them dealing with God and faith: God as the creator of personality, the impossibility of teaching and learning faith, God as the essence of beauty. The third poem was about evil:

«Ich mag es nicht, hier zu kämpfen – das hier ist ein friedliches Land, es hat nie einen Krieg geführt. Doch an diesem Abend wird es für eine Stunde zu einem gewalttätigen Land werden.» Muhammad Ali lächelte, als er 1971 in Zürich diese Kriegserklärung in eine Schweizer Fernsehkamera sagte. Der Champ war angereist, um im Hallenstadion gegen den deutschen Schwergewichtler Jürgen Blin zu kämpfen. Schon vor seiner Abreise in New York machte Ali keinen Hehl daraus, wo er sich im Verhältnis zu Blin sah: «Jürgen Blin – der fällt hin!» An einer Pressekonferenz in Zürich dichtete Ali ein paar weitere Kampfzeilen, wieder auf Deutsch: «Wenn du nicht besser bist, mein lieber Blin – dann macht das Ganze für Dich keinen Sinn!»

Doch das Grossmaul konnte auch anders dichten. Im Zürcher Edelhotel Atlantis, wo der Boxer mit seiner riesigen Entourage abstieg, hinterliess Muhammad Ali auf Briefpapier des Hotels in roter und blauer Kugelschreibertinte vier kurze Gedichte. Drei davon handeln von Gott und dem Glauben – Gott als Schöpfer der Persönlichkeit, die Unmöglichkeit, Glauben zu lehren und lernen, Gott als Essenz des Schönen. Das dritte handelt vom Bösen:

Evil is an ever-floating thing – sometimes here, sometimes there. So evil in man is Just a Cloud; it comes and goes; and if We trust in his goodness the Clouds will disappear, –

Was Muhammad Ali seeking absolution through these lines for sometimes climbing into the ring and using all his strength and wisdom in order to bring down his opponent, for going to war? When he'd step out of the ring, the cloud of evil will have dispersed – and the country will be a peaceful place once again. Ali signed each of the four poems as he used to do: «Muhammad Ali Peace 1971». He came to wage war – but he came in peace

Das Böse ist immerzu in Bewegung – einmal hier, einmal dort. Also ist die menschliche Bosheit wie eine Wolke, sie kommt und geht, und wenn wir an [Gottes] Güte glauben, werden sich die Wolken verziehen.

Suchte Muhammad Ali in diesen Zeilen nach Absolution dafür, dass er manchmal in den Ring stieg und seine ganze Kraft und Klugheit dazu einsetzte, seinen Gegner niederzuringen, dass er manchmal in den Krieg zog? Wenn er aus dem Ring steigen wird, wird sich die Wolke des Bösen verzogen haben – und das Land wieder ein Ort des Friedens sein. Jedes der vier Gedichte unterschrieb Ali, wie er es zu tun pflegte: «Muhammad Ali Peace 1971». Er kam, um Krieg zu führen – aber er kam in Frieden.

The two sheets of stationery from the Hotel Atlantis, on which Ali had written the poems, were auctioned not long ago by a company in Las Vegas for 5500$, as they confirmed in an email.

Die zwei Blätter Briefpapier aus dem Hotel Atlantis, auf die Ali die Gedichte geschrieben hatte, wurden vor nicht allzu langer Zeit von einer Auktionsfirma in Las Vegas für 5500 Dollar versteigert, wie diese auf Anfrage mitteilt.
